The five factors that move the price most

1. Height. Cost doesn't rise linearly. Once a wall retains over 1 metre, it generally needs development approval and site-specific engineering in SA, post embedment deepens, and post steel gets heavier. A 1.5 m wall can cost more than double a 750 mm wall of the same length.

2. Access. A wall an excavator can reach directly is one price. The same wall behind a 900 mm gate, downslope of the house, or requiring hand-carried materials is another. Machine access is the first thing we assess on any site visit.

3. Soil and drainage. Adelaide's eastern clay wants to hold water against your wall every winter. Proper drainage — ag-pipe, geofabric, screened aggregate backfill — is non-negotiable and built into any honest quote. Quotes that look cheap are often missing exactly this.

4. Demolition. Removing a failing wall (and disposing of old concrete, sleepers or asbestos-cement sheeting) can add $1,000–$3,000 depending on size and material.

5. What's on top. Fences, structures or driveways above the wall change the loads (engineers call it surcharge) and the design.
